Chapter Eighteen

After witnessing Darius’ mariachi band, Tipsy needed a well-deserved break. The event infuriated her. Just thinking about it made her ears turn bright red.

To calm herself down, she headed to the town’s botanical garden. With barely any people around, Tipsy sighed in relief at the idea of getting some peace and quiet. Near the pond, she spotted a large boulder that overlooked a scenic vista. She raced towards it, climbed atop it, and sat with a groan of pleasure.

“Finally,” she mumbled, closing her eyes and lifting her chin towards the sky. A gentle breeze drifted by, brushing through her hair. She inhaled, taking it all in.

The bushes behind her suddenly rustled, followed by a series of soft swishing noises. Eyes wide, Tipsy whirled around and shapeshifted into a cougar. Her heart clamored against her chest and her claws unsheathed to meet a potential attacker.

To her surprise, her attackers’ appearance matched her own. Before her stood Biscuit and Crumpet, Sassy Merkin’s cougar guardians.

Tipsy bared her teeth.

You scared me!

Oh, Crumpet telepathed. We didn’t mean—

--To frighten you, Biscuit continued. We got curious.

Dangerous to sneak up, Tipsy shot back, eyes flicking between them. You always do that?

Do what? Biscuit asked. We do—

--Nothing unusual. Crumpet’s eerily steady gaze rested directly upon Tipsy. Then both cats slowly and deliberately settled themselves on the ground, submissively awaiting her response. Tipsy picked up on their body language, which offered the clearest apology yet.

No worry, you did no wrong, she conceded.

Relief, Biscuit said. We spook people sometimes.

Sorry, Crumpet added. We can’t help it.

Then Crumpet narrowed her eyes as she studied Tipsy’s form from her front legs to her hind legs, down to the subtle movement of her black-tipped tail. The cougar grunted in approval.

Impressive, Crumpet said. Shifting into cougar.

Quickly, too. Biscuit’s rounded ears twitched lightly. Never saw such talent before. You, Crumpet?

Nope.

Look at her form!

Anyone think you natural cougar, said Crumpet.

We can tell difference, said Biscuit.

But that does not negate talent, said Crumpet.

Tipsy blinked.

Thank you, I appreciate, she replied.

Only one problem, Crumpet said. Her nose twitched. Biscuit, do you see?

As clearly as clouds.

Tipsy stiffened, confused out of her mind.

Any cougar could tell.

Yes. Biscuit stared down at Tipsy’s claws. Too short.

Huh? Crumpet gaped at her sister. You confused.

How she defend herself?

No, claws too long!

Disagree, Biscuit said, followed by a quick shake of her head. You imagine things, as usual.

Hilarious, Crumpet shot back. You funny.

A small part of Tipsy wanted to run away as fast as possible. Not because a pair of apex predators had invaded her personal space and were now debating her personal attributes. And not because she felt any fear.

She’d come to the botanical garden to find serenity, not more disputes. And now she found herself embroiled in a literal catfight between heavily-armed opponents.

But she bit her tongue.

How Sassy? She asked, hoping to dispel some tension. She alright?

Good as can be, Biscuit replied.

She interesting, said Crumpet.

Yeah, Tipsy agreed. Dislikes people, so never leaves house.

Exaggeration, Crumpet said. She leaves.

Tipsy balked.

...Seriously?

Night murder, Sassy gone hours. Thought we not notice.

We notice, Crumpet supplemented.
